Afghanistan is a country nestled between the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia.  As of April 2022, nearly 41 million Afghans reside within the nation of Afghanistan.  About 9 million more Afghans live outside of Afghanistan as members of the Afghan diaspora.  The foundation of the modern state of Afghanistan was laid in July 1747 with the establishment of the Durrani Empire by Ahmad Shah Abdali.

On August 15, 2021, President Ashraf Ghani fled the country and the city of Kabul fell to Taliban forces, marking the end of the Islamic Republic's rule and the restoration of the Islamic Emirate's government.  Although Afghanistan's de facto government is the Islamic Emirate, de jure recognition in the international arena is split between the Islamic Emirate and the former Islamic Republic.
